Addiction School for Mental Health Professionals
This course provides mental health professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and psychotherapists with understanding of the basic concepts of addiction, addiction treatment, integrated treatment, and recovery. These concepts include biomedical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of addiction as a disease; the use of motivational interviewing, strategic family therapy, 12-step facilitation, rational recovery, pharmacological treatment, Brief Intervention in Primary Practice, and other treatment best practices, and understanding of the 12-step recovery movement. Students will form an understanding of key resources and texts that inform practice of mental health work with patients with addiction including ASAM placement criteria.

The intention of this course is to provide mental health professionals with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to identify patients with substance use disorders, differentially diagnose substance abuse from substance dependence, recommend appropriate level of care, provide mental health treatment to patients with addiction, support recovery, and collaborate with addictions treatment professionals.


COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Understand The disease model of addiction
2. Understand the Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual model of addiction
3. Distinguish between substance Use, Misuse, Abuse, and Dependence
4. Describe the pharmacology of psychoactive substances
5. Understand patterns of comorbidity among patients with addiction
6. Use screening and assessment methods for identification, diagnosis, and treatment planning
7. Use 12 Step facilitation, Behavioral and CBT, Mindfulness, MI, Group, and Psychoeducation treatment techniques
8. Understand Addiction as a family illness and provide services to family members
9. Assist patients to pay for treatment
10. Develop skills in cultural competence
11. Identify treatment crises and employ crisis intervention techniques
12. Understand transference, countertransference and how therapist beliefs and experiences affect treatment

Our trainer for this CEU cruise, Steve Lange is a psychologist, Certified Addictions Counselor, and grateful parent and family member. He has worked with families, children, adolescents, and adults since 1983 and was an adjunct faculty member at Fordham University and Chestnut Hill College. He has been published in Journal of Family Psychotherapy, Journal of Educational and Psychological Consultation, and International Journal of Special Education.  His interactive, fun style is well received and highly acclaimed.
